Strategic is a global cautious fund that prioritises capital preservation and low volatility across all market cycles. The fund strategy is based on a conviction led approach to portfolio construction.

The CF Miton Strategic Portfolio is one of only four funds, out of 106 funds in the IMA Mixed Investment 40% - 85% shares sector that delivered a positive return in 2008. One of the other four funds that delivered a positive performance was the CF Miton Special Situations Portfolio.

The fund’s impressive long term performance is based on the equally long term tenure of Trustnet Alpha manager, Martin Gray who has run the fund since launch in 1996.

In 2008, The Daily Telegraph rated Martin Gray as one of its top ten fund managers of the decade.

The fund managers are not constrained by an index or benchmark when determining the asset allocation of the fund. The fund will proactively utilise cash/currencies to limit the downside and the fund aims to provide superior returns over the longer term coupled with low volatility.

Martin Gray

Martin began his fund management career in 1979, he established the investment division of a UK authorised company in 1987, becoming a director in 1990. Martin joined Miton Investments as a fund manager and director in 1994 and has been responsible for the management of the Strategic Portfolio since launch in December 1996 and also the Special Situations Portfolio which was launched a year later. Martin has won numerous fund management awards including the coveted asset allocator of the year award. Martin became a manager of Arcturus in August 2008.

James Sullivan

James has worked in the finance industry since 1999 when he joined the investment team at the law firm Foot Anstey. The team then became the founder members of iimia plc in April 2002 when the law firm outsourced the investment operation. Rapid growth of the iimia business witnessed the merger with Miton Asset Management and Midas Capital. James was subsequently appointed as support manager to Martin Gray on Miton Special Situations and Miton Strategic. James is lead manager on the Miton Arcturus Fund.

The fund strategy is based on an adaptive and pragmatic approach to portfolio construction, seeking to use skills in asset allocation to achieve outperformance. Low volatility and absolute growth are given a priority over out performance of peers or an index. The fund managers begin the process with core asset allocation views and then adds value via satellite holdings.

The starting point is cash, and then the fund managers consider which assets should provide a better return and evaluates the risk versus return expectations of each investment. The fund has no benchmark weightings at all. The fund managers will look at what is happening in the global economy and build macro positions.

Investors in this fund typically are looking to create a core holding in their portfolio that will be proactively managed on a daily basis. This fund is slightly more conservative than a typical balanced managed fund and will at times hold considerably more in cash instruments to protect investors from adverse market conditions.

This fund aims to seek the higher returns typically associated with equities but whilst still maintaining an element of caution in the portfolio.
